Finland has the highest food standard in the EU and the unique Finnish way of producing pork comes down to a simple principle: the best living conditions produce the best results. Finnish pigs are fed according to a precise feeding plan with high-quality feed and pure water.

Finnish farmers care about their pigs and do only what they believe in. And that’s why Finnish pigs have 25 % more space to roam than EU legislation requires. Finnish pork is hormones-free and can be grown antibiotics-free.

On the country level, an efficient food safety control system has been employed and a trustworthy Quality Assurance label system has been created, which provides proof of animal health and product security.

TIDY ANIMALS?

As opposed to the stereotype, pigs are really tidy animals. They love to live and prosper in controlled environment. Finnish piggeries have considerably more space per head than pigs elsewhere in the world. All pigs can eat at the same time and have enough floor space to lie down, which enables them to live and grow comfortably and be stress-free.

To ensure pigs get to live in a clean and comfortable place, Finnish farmers divide piggeries into separated areas for different purposes, gridded section for toilet and solid-floored areas for rest, which greatly improves the hygiene situation.

Each part of piggeries even has its own ventilation system. The temperature and humidity are constantly monitored to make sure pigs live and grow in a comfortable situation. Adjustments are made as the pigs grow because pigs at different stages prefer different level of warmth. Heating is provided by an adjustable underfloor heating system.

Throughout their lives, the pigs must have access to stimuli, such as chewable toys, newspaper, sawdust, twigs and balls.
